Whitening

Are your teeth darkening as you get older? Like many adults, do you drink coffee, tea or red wine? Maybe you want to lighten your natural tooth colour or get rid of years of tobacco or food stains.

Though teeth range in shades of light greyish-yellow, not completely white, many Canadians desire a brighter smile. Because age and daily life show on our teeth, a whiter smile makes many people feel younger and more attractive.

Though cosmetic in nature according to Health Canada, the general dentists of Horizon Family Dentistry can offer professional whitening with Philips Zoom in Lindsay and Havelock.

Bonding and Veneers

Dental bonding, or bonded restoration, can be done comfortably in one dentist’s visit for minor repairs to one or several teeth. Your dentist will use a tooth-coloured composite resin that is shaped on your tooth or teeth for a variety of effects, including:

  • To cover the missing part of a chipped tooth
  • To restore size to a broken tooth
  • To build up a tooth or fill in between teeth
  • To paint over deeply stained teeth

Here’s how bonding and the composite resin work:

  • A mild chemical makes the tooth’s surface a bit rough to help the composite resin bond to the enamel
  • Composite resin is chosen to match your natural tooth colour
  • The composite resin is layered and light used to harden each layer
  • The hardened composite resin layers are shaped and polished so the finished tooth is natural looking and smooth

At a second visit to check the bonding, your dentist may polish the finished tooth again. Your dentist can also touch up the bonding if it wears down in the future.

Caring for your Veneers

You dentist may not be able to fit you with veneers and suggest another option if you have any of these dental conditions:

  • Tooth decay or gum disease needing treatment first
  • Severely damaged tooth that needs a crown instead
  • Loss of enamel that will not let a veneer stick properly
  • Teeth grinding or clenching that can chip or break porcelain veneers

Take care of your veneers by following these recommendations:

  • Brush and floss daily
  • Check the placement and seal of the veneers to keep stains or cavities from forming on your teeth underneath them
  • If you have a cavity or trouble with a veneer, have it treated immediately; veneers are not reversible and need to be redone
  • Don’t habitually grind or clench your teeth, bite solid objects, or tear into hard or chewy foods
